The work of Operación San Andrés began in 2003 with the organization’s first annual mission trip to Peru. While the mission of OSA has expanded to include ongoing day-to-day ministry in Collique, periodic Medical and Dental mission trips continue to be the primary way to involve large numbers of medical professionals and lay volunteers in the work of OSA. The first OSA mission trip to Peru in 2003 had 16 medical/dental professionals and lay volunteers. Since then OSA mission trips have experienced significant growth. Now, more than 175 different persons from the USA, Mexico, and Scotland have participated in OSA mission trips to Collique. OSA mission trips have become more frequent with two or three trips each year. During a typical one week campaign, over 1000 patients are treated for medical, dental, and vision problems.
The Medical team for larger OSA mission trips typically has 8 to 10 doctors with various medical specialties and several nurses. Medications are dispensed through a well stocked pharmacy. OSA is exploring ways to provide more continuous holistic health care and wellness education in Collique. The Dental team typically has two or three dentists and/or hygienists. Several dental chairs and many of the instruments required by the dentists and hygienists are stored on site in Collique.
Since 2005 an optometrist has traveled with the OSA mission team to address Vision Care for the residents of Collique. Approximately 4000 pairs of prescription eye glasses have been donated to or purchased by OSA. Many of these have already been dispensed to vision impaired people in Peru. Large quantities of reading glasses, dispensed during each mission trip, provide major improvement in close-up vision.
While medical and dental care is the focus of OSA mission trips, complimentary ministries include Christian Education, and Construction. Please use the links for more information about these important facets of the OSA mission.
